Season 2, Episode 2

USS CALLISTER

ABSTRACT

Infinity is the most popular augmented reality game on the market, created by Robert Daly, Chief Technical Officer at Callister Inc., a huge gaming company responsible for developing the most innovative games on the market.

Early on, there was a rumor that Robert Daly, the founder of Infinity, had his own, secret level that was protected by a Virtual Private Network. Cloaked in mystery, gamers from all over the world tried to hack Infinity’s private levels.

Daly is constantly disgruntled throughout his hours at work. The frustrations become so overwhelming that Daly uses his private level of Infinity to torture and imprison genetic copies of his coworkers, who were unable to exit the game. Aboard the U.S.S. Callister, Daly would exert his power by torturing and killing them, only to revive them and bring them back into the game.

As one might imagine, Daly’s networks were private, but without realizing it, his Virtual Private Network lapsed while he was working at Callister. Within minutes of the lapse, Daly’s home office became a target for hackers and gamers. Within hours, they found Daly’s secret level.

For the crewmembers of the U.S.S. Callister, the day of Daly’s VPN lapse was an average day. The crew waited in fear for Daly to return home from work. When they heard footsteps outside the command center doors, they all immediately froze.

The doors swung open, and in walked a nerdy, stout young man, eyes full of excitement.

“WOAHHHH! I DID IT!”

the stranger exclaimed.

The crew on board the U.S.S. Callister were shocked when a new player was added to their spaceship.

“Who the hell are you?”

James, the CEO of Callister Inc, asked the anonymous player.

“Did I make it?? Am I on the secret level?!”

The player jumped around excitedly.

“I can’t believe it’s real. I’ve heard about this and have been trying to hack it! I did it!”

The crew heard Daly’s footsteps outside the door, prompting them to hide the new player.

Daly, infuriated from another day at Callister, proceeds to torture his crew without knowing that there was a stranger aboard witnessing the entire scene. Dally storms out, leaving the crew to recover.

As the anonymous player crawled out from under the control panel, the crew frantically explained their situation. The crew begged the player to quickly leave the U.S.S. Callister and lead other gamers to them.

Over the coming days, hundreds of players began to find the U.S.S. Callister, prompting rumors on Joystiq, Kotaku, Buzzfeed, and Twitter about the unethical practices of Infinity’s founder.

Tech journalists began to write scathing think pieces about the torture chamber Dally created. Soon enough, a list of the crew members names were shared publicly, and the real-world interview with each member of Callister, Inc. began.

Daly became the target of an investigation. The FBI raided his home, confiscating the genetic samples he had taken from his coworkers. The U.S.S. Callister crew then filed a lawsuit for Non-Consensual DNA Theft, Mental and Emotional Torture, and Exploitation.

Callister, Inc. found a way to destroy Daly’s level, releasing the U.S.S. Callister crew from Infinity forever.

After the scandal, gamers recanted stories about finding the U.S.S. Callister. Robert Daly, considered by the courts to be a danger to society, spent his days in a high-security prison, in solitary confinement.

Daly spent his days in a cell, but whispers of other secret levels within Infinity surfaced...

One of the whispers? There is a secret level of Infinity designed by the old U.S.S. Callister crew… and in this level, Robert Daly is forced to relive his downfall day after day… watching the events of his jailing from a cell.
